Restoring classic cars often means salvaging and refurbishing parts and giving them brand new life.  But with the 60163 Tornado, it is a steam locomotive that looks like a locomotive that was built in the 1950s, but it was in fact made during the 90’s.

How come it’s named Tornado?  The locomotive’s name was actually given by the sponsor who has given a hefty £50,000.  While the first gulf war was fresh on each person’s thoughts that time, it has been decided to bestow the locomotive a name honoring the RAF pilots who flew the Tornado fighter aircraft.  Therefore, the name “Tornado.”

The RAF themselves had offered the maker of the 60163 Tornado the nameplates bearing the name “Tornado” through the frame laying ceremony in January 1995.

In an effort to give commemoration to classic steam engines, a project was launched to give them new life and work began to assemble the 60163 Tornado.  A1 Steam Locomotive Trust and Locomotive Construction Co. coordinated and built the Tornado as part of the locomotive heritage movement.

The Tornado is an idea combining classic engineering and modern ingenuity and it’s a verification to how vintage objects turn out to be more sought after as time passes.  But its price tag did not come cheap.  On the project’s commencement, the initial cost for the Tornado was at £1.6 million but because of rising costs brought by inflation and price increases, the cost almost doubled at £3 million and the Tornado was finished two years after the original schedule.

In July 29, 2008, the Tornado began its first run at Darlington along Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire on the Great Central Railway in Loughborough, a preserved double track railway intended to both entertain tourists and carry people to their destinations.

The Tornado was ran at speeds of 121 km/h (75 mph) and its Apple Green repainting is its last phase of being authorized as a main-line passenger train.  In January 31, 2009, the Tornado made its first run to transport passengers.  Making the Tornado a passenger train is one way to repay the debts incurred with the construction of the Tornado.

A steam engine train like the Tornado can reach speeds of up to 160 kmh but because its objective is more of for exhibition than means of transport, it’s only limited to 140 kmh.

The original color of the Tornado was grey and the logo on the side of its coal-car initially wore the A1 Trust’s website.  As soon as the Tornado’s color was repainted to apple green to commemorate the the 1940’s locomotives, the tender’sinsignia were changed to British Railways.

The Tornado’s paintwork was done by the NRM in front of 500 people and were done with the use of just hands and paintbrushes.

Due to the endeavor and the cost poured in the Tornado’s building, Bachmann trains has commemorated this new age classic in one of their limited edition model train collection.  The Bachmann 32-550A Class A1 60163 ‘Tornado’ has captured every detail of the life-size Tornado and will be a valuable piece to one’s model trains collection.
